Overseas Adventure, Learning ... YOU?
This program is for full-year travel including school in another country,
where you will be hosted by a Rotary District and Rotary Club,
and live with a family or families in the nation you are visiting.

International Author thinks Rotary YE is the best exchange program.

Where will I go?
At this time Rotary District 6110 has contacts for exchange in Mexico, Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, Argentina, Slovak Republic, Czech Republic, Switzerland,  Germany, France, Austria, Turkey,  Hungary,  Russia, Japan, Poland, Belgium, Malaysia, India, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines , and possibly Sweden, Finland, Australia, Italy, Romania, Chile, Spain, Cambodia, the Ukraine, and other countries.
What does it cost?

LESS than it costs most parents to keep the student at home!
There is an application fee of $200 which is non-refundable if you attend the District-level interviews.   If you are selected for the program, the cost to you and your parents would be about $3875 plus any spending money your parents choose to give you.  Some scholarship funds available for application fee, and some scholarship funds will be available for the 1/3 to 2/3 of the exchange fee.

Students will also have such expenses as,

  • getting a passport,
  • applying for a visa,
  • paying the emergency fund (approximately $500, refundable at end of year) required by the host district, and
  •  traveling to the host-country's consulate (in the USA) if an interview or an in person appearance is required as part of the visa application process

Note:  The Emergency Fund covers any "emergency" expenses that a student might have during his/her exchange.  The hosting district overseas sets the amount of the Emergency Fund.  The required amount of the Emergency Fund varies from host district to host district. However, it usually ranges from $400 - $600. When funds from this account are spent to cover an emergency expenditure, the student's family must replenish the fund so that it always remains at the required level for the full period of the exchange. Any or all funds remaining in the Emergency Fund account at the end of the student's exchange are returned to the student.

Who Pays?
Parents - who can actually save money (as opposed to the cost of keeping the student at home) at the same time that they give their child an unparalleled "leg up" in the world! Most students can CLEP out of 8 - 28 hours of foreign language classes at the university level -- that's the equivalent of approximately $1600 - $5600 in college tuition at $200/credit hour.

The Outbound Flat Fee can be paid

  • in one payment of $3875 (due January 31st), or
  • in six installment payments of $645.83 each (due Jan 31st , Feb 28th, March 31st, April 30th, May 31st, and June 30th)

  • Meals at a Rotary meeting one to four times per month at Club expense
  • Counselor, who is the student's advocate for the full year
  • Interaction with Club members and their families
What do Host Parents provide?
  • Family Atmosphere & Room
  • Food
  • Travel, if family vacation
  • Transportation to and from school

Note: in most cases the student will be staying with two or more host families, for 3 to 6 months each.
Who Benefits?
The student, the parents sending the student abroad, the Host Parents, the Host Club, the sending country, the hosting country, the people who meet the student abroad, the people who meet the student after he or she returns home ... the whole world!
What's in it for the student?
  • A new maturity, typically reaching the "emotional age" of someone in his or her mid-20s
  • A new confidence in oneself and a new personal world-view
  • Proficiency in a second language
  • CLEP out of 8-28 credit hours of college language (a college tuition savings worth $1600-$5600, approximately!)
  • World-wide networking! Rotarians are professional people, owners or senior managers, in business or government - Rotary Exchange Students develop life-long relationships with the most influential people in the region of the country they visit
  • A major advantage as a natural recruit for an international company
  • The opportunity to serve by promoting PEACE THROUGH UNDERSTANDING - our main goal!
What do those who are beginning the adventure say?
In 2010-2011 we have students from our area currently studying in France, Germany, Italy, and Taiwan.  Take a LOOK!
How can I meet and talk with some Rotary Exchange Students?
Every year in Tulsa almost 200 Rotary Exchange Students gather for an annual meeting. The gathering is  January 28-30, 2010.   If you are interested in going there and interacting with some students and hearing them tell of their own experiences with this program, send an e-mail message to us, using our "Contact Form".  Note: Participants would have to arrange their own travel to/from Tulsa. And, there is a weekend fee (approximately $70 per student) associated with this event.
