I believe that it is important, when overseas, to be a traveler, as opposed to a tourist. to be this traveler, one must be immersed in the culture of the foreign country, be open to anything, and be flexible. I hope to be all of these things while in Europe, but I also hope to go beyond that. I want to make Italy my home. Just by living with a host family and attending an Italian school, I hope to learn the mannerisms of the Italians and about its art, music, literature, and more of its culture. I do speak an adequate amount of Italian to get by, but I hope my language abilities will blossom as the months go by. Languages are very important to me and to my family. I also speak French fluently and sign language proficiently. And, specializing in music while I am abroad for a year will further my development as a pianist. -- April 15. 2000. I have chosen to go overseas for a year because it will be a great experience. I am going to learn a lot about Germans and their culture. I also am going to become fluent in German, which I have wanted to do since I first started studying this language four years ago. I am very excited to meet many new people and to get a bigger view of the world. I will come back more mature and independent. this will help me with deciding what my major is going to be in college. I am thrilled to have this opportunity and cannot wait for my year aborad. It will be so much fun. --- April 20,.2000 Sorry No Comment Yet ! Last summer I went to Russia for three weeks. That glimpse of life in a foreign country, however brief, was all it took to convince me to spend more time abroad. I decided to be a foreign exchange student for a year. When I looked at the different exchange programs, Rotary International's stood out from the rest for many reasons. They will arrange for a safe and accomodable household to stay in. They offer financial support, as well as travel support.while abroad. And you will gain invaluable experience with a foreign language. All of these reasons, pluse the incredible experience the trip surely promises make it difficult to wait until I embark on my journey. Thank you Rotary!! -- April 13, 2000

{short description of image} I decided to be a foreign exchange student because it is a great opportunity to learn and teach. I will be learning to speak another language, which can benefit me in almost any career I choose. I think living in another country will teach me more than another culture and language, although those are important to me. I will learn how to interact with other people that are different from me, how to respect different beliefs and teach others about my own culture. Not only will I add to my knowledge, I will build good characteristics in myself and be a representative of our country. That is very exciting to me. It will be challenging to live in another country for more than a few weeks. Living there is different from being a tourist. I think it will be a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. I cant't wait to meet the challenge! --April 22, 2000 I am choosing to study overseas for a year more or less because it will be a great experience. I will have the opportunity to experience a whole new culture. Also, I will hopefully be placed somewhere in South America where I can become fluent in Spanish. Living overseas for a year will help me become more independent..----- April 30, 2000  I chose rotary youth exchange because I saw a poster in our high school's counselor office I want to go on the exchange for many reasons, but the first and foremost is my want for education. I think that the Youth Exchange Program will be that, VERY educational. Rotary really gets involved with its program, and Rotary has been a great help.-- June 7, 2000

Putting oneself into a foreign situation is the best way to discover one's identity. One reason I wanted to study overseas was to learn about myself. I chose to be a foreign exchange student to India because I want to be truly open-mined. And though it is true that I am very frightened of whatever it is I may find when I look at myself in this perspective, I feel that it is the risk I must take in exchange for what I know will be one of the most memorable and changing experiences of my lifetime. ---April 19, 2000. For the last two years, I have been involved with various foreign relations organizations. The people I have met from overseas were probably my biggest influences towards making this decision to study abroad. I love change and what better way to experience change than to live and to breathe in all the cultural difference and similarities of another country. There are so many things I have yet to learn about this world, and I think the best way to begin is to get a first- hand experience of it, one piece at a time. I hope this experience will show me the true sense of "Unity in Diversity" in which I firmly believe is the principle that binds mankind together for the best.--written in France, January 29, 2000   What ultimately convinced me to study overseas was the fact that every person I mentioned it to said they wished they had done it when they were in school. I realized that I could not let this opportunity pass me. Studying overseas for a year improves so many aspects of your life, becoming fleunt in a foreign language, developing independence, experiencing a different culture; they're all things that will change your life. Then compare these things to what will happen if you stay here in America. Plus, you'll be giving yourself a better education and many more options and advantages for college. After I considered all of this I found it harder to find reasons to stay and not study abroad. --April 23,2000
